Matthew Ireland

Brief biography

I am originally from North Wales, where I briefly worked in the laser micromachining industry. My alma mater is Churchill College, Cambridge, where I completed my degree in Computer Science. I can now be found in the Physics department at University College London.

I have a very wide range of interests, across both Computer Science and Physics.

Academically, my interests lie in SDN, wireless sensor networks, horology and digital signal processing. I also follow developments in quantum computing, bioinformatics and photonics. From an engineering perspective, I enjoy keeping up-to-date in microfabrication, optics and digital electronics.

Outside of academia, my hobbies include oenology, reading, crossword puzzles, Enigma puzzles, analogue electronics, holography, amateur radio (MW0MIE), photography, astronomy, hiking, contributing to Wikipedia, sailing and playing the tuba, piano and flute. I am an avid Linux user, and advocate of Free Software.
